Curing compounds and hardeners can be another problem

New slabs are sometimes treated with curing compounds, sealers, densifiers or other materials. Sherwin-Williams specifically warns that concrete treatments must be compatible with the coating or removed. A slab can be 60 days old and still have a bond-breaking treatment at the surface.

Mechanical preparation can remove many surface treatments, but the installer should identify what was used when possible.

Moisture can still be high after a month

Concrete does not dry at a fixed rate. Thickness, mix design, vapor retarder, weather, enclosed conditioning and groundwater all affect moisture. ASTM F2170 exists because internal relative humidity can remain elevated after the concrete is strong enough for normal use.

For a high-risk or moisture-sensitive system, the installer should compare test results with the product's requirements instead of relying only on the date the slab was poured.
